Session4: Unconventional props styling
I explored how non-fashion items could be developed into fashion relevant content, ideas, and concepts in this session because It isn’t always the ‘fashion’ that can tell a story or impact when creating content. Using ‘props’ can create drama, narrative or atmosphere to an image. A leading international fashion photographer, Tim Walker, is one of my favourite artists who is the tutor showed us his works as examples. Every time I see his works, I am always amazed, and I’ve always thought I wanted to create a piece like him. I enjoy thinking about how I can express and tell the story or the concept through the image. I was super excited to create the image. However, I’ve always struggled to have many ideas in my mind, but I don’t know how I can represent them in actuality. Sometimes because it is hard to take photos, and sometimes, I don’t have the skills to edit to create my ideas. In addition, it was working as a group, so it was a bit hard to arrange other people’s opinions. Each person has different tastes, but we have to decide on one theme.
Using props in photography is a simple way to create a strong point of interest in my image. I can take control of the scene by choosing what kind of props to use and where to place them within the frame. In my opinion, It’s entirely up to me to decide how I’d like to compose and present my image. I don’t have this kind of freedom when I shoot a landscape or architecture. I can move around and find a new angle, but I can’t definitely move a building. It’s also a great way to explore and expand my creative side. Anything can be used as a prop, and only my imagination will set the limits.
