Session3: Makeup styling
When it comes especially to fashion shows, the media often overlooks makeup and focuses on clothing, accessories, designers, models, and street style stars. Makeup artists require to bring to life the designer’s idea, create and follow a particular concept, and make sure there is a spectacle. I felt how makeup could add drama and ‘beauty’ to the concept through the session. In addition, there is a lot of effort behind the scene that the audience never anticipate. While the central point of fashion is the clothing and accessories, it is worth taking a moment to take in the entire look as it has been conceived the makeup, the special effects, the technique used, the hairstyling. I thought no look is complete without any of these. People choose to wear makeup in their day to day life. Often, we choose a kind of makeup that matches or compliments our clothes, be it a specific shade of lipstick or a winged liner. This means there is already a link between clothing and makeup in our minds.
I used to do ballet so that I could do stage makeup. Therefore, this kind of bold makeup style was familiar to me. I was so excited to create and thinking the look because editorial makeup for fashion has no rules. It can be anything from natural beauty to avant-garde, but still, its job is to interpret fashion and provide a specific look. It has become mainstream to some extent proves makeup plays a significant role in what we aim to express and who we wish to be seen. It was still challenging to create makeup ideas that matched the styling look. Because the makeup stands too much or uses different colours, it will not fit the concept. However, In my group, we set the theme as too much. Therefore, I can use many different materials and shapes or colours. When I applied the long line to my eye vertically, it was so difficult. Also, the colourful eyeshadow couldn’t look sharp. I thought the touch in this drawing was too delicate. I had similar experiences when I had a ballet concert. I needed to do bold, and that can look attractive on the stage, and the eye looks more significant from the audience. I want to try several styles for the SDS and use different meĀ„aterials to express my concept.
